EU-MEDIN

"The EU-MEDIN project aims to improve the interaction and synergy between the actors of European research in the field of Natural Risks and Disasters and all organizations, institutions or individuals interested in disaster management research and development issues. This portal is dedicated to supporting the needs of the partners of the EU-MEDIN project, as well as anybody interested in its objectives."

ABSTRACT

Europe is at the leading edge of scientific research in many areas. But it is much less good at converting scientific breakthroughs into commercially successful products and services. As an Accompanying Measure project, EU-MEDIN will stimulate and promote the dissemination and awareness of the EESD Programme activities and shall help to better exploit the results of RTD projects and their socio-economic and policy implications. EU-MEDIN can be considered as the appropriate context to organise and manage the recording of research results in the field of natural disasters and to support the effective implementation of the new instruments of the European research activity, such as the Networks of Excellence and the Integrated Projects.

OBJECTIVES

European Commission research on natural disasters is performed with the overall objective of unravelling the processes involved, comprehensively assessing, forecasting, mitigating and managing risk. Results reflect scientific accomplishments worthy of providing useful information needed to extend research, improve decision making and support effective management. However these results are neither visible enough nor accessible to the majority of interested and potential users. The aim of the EU-MEDIN project, is to create the scientific, technological and socio-economic context and setup the required background in order to promote the systematic reporting of, dissemination and transparent access to the research results of the EU-supported projects in the field of natural disasters.

EXPECTED RESULTS

The EU-MEDIN project plans to provide the following results:

  • To support information flow, interaction, synergy and interdisciplinary collaboration between researchers from various fields in topics related to natural disasters through the EU-MEDIN Portal and
  • To provide a standard metadata schema that will support organising, make visible, accessible and useful the results of RTD projects in the area of natural disasters, through an appropriate, web-based EUMEDIN Service.
